As an Assistant Station Master, the key responsibilities include:

RRB ASM Exam Pattern
As per the official notification, the RRB ASM selection process will include the following stages
- Computer Based Test (CBT) - 1
- Computer Based Test - 2
- Computer-Based Aptitude Test / Typing Skill Test
- Document Verification / Medical Examination
All the applicants will be called initially for the Computer Based Test - 1, and then only those candidates who will outscore the RRB ASM Cut Off Marks of the CBT - 1 will qualify further for the next stage of the recruitment process, that is, CBT - 2 and so on. - The CBT - 1 is only qualifying in nature, which means, the marks scored by the candidates in the CBT - 1 will not be counted for the final selection.
- However, candidates who will fail in CBT - 1 will be considered disqualified from the recruitment process and will not proceed to the next stage of recruitment.
- The CBT - 1 consists of 100 Questions related to different subjects like Maths, Reasoning, and Current Affairs.
- Each question will be of 1 mark.
- The maximum mark for the CBT is 100 marks and the time allotted is 90 minutes.
- The questions asked will be MCQ type.
- There will be a negative marking of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer attempted by the candidates.
- There will be no negative marking for the unattempted questions.
- The language of the questions will be English, Hindi, Urdu, or other local languages, depending upon the RRBs chosen by the applicants while filling the online application form.
- The PWD (Person with Disabilities) candidates will be given an extra 30 minutes (Total: 120 Minutes) for the CBT - 1.

- The marks scored by the candidates in the CBT - 2 will be considered while preparing for the final merit list.
- The CBT - 2 consists of 120 Questions related to different subjects like Maths, Reasoning, and Current Affairs.
- Each question will be of 1 mark.
- The maximum mark for the CBT is 120 marks and the time allotted is 90 minutes.
- The questions asked will be MCQ type.
- There will be a negative marking of 1/3rd marks for each wrong answer attempted by the candidates.
- There will be no negative marking for the unattempted questions.
- The language of the questions will be English, Hindi, Urdu, or other local languages, depending upon the RRBs chosen by the applicants while filling the online application form.

Stage 3: Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)
- Candidates, after passing the CBT will be called further to appear for the second stage of the RRB ASM recruitment process, that is, Computer Based Aptitude Test.
- The shortlisting of the candidates for the CBAT stage will be done on the basis of their performance in the CBT - 2.
- CBAT will have the number of applicants equal to 8 times the total number of vacancies based on the merit of the second stage CBT.
- The candidates need to secure a minimum T-Score of 42 marks in each of the test batteries to qualify.
- This applies to all candidates irrespective of their category or community.
- No relaxation in the minimum T- Score is permissible.
- The CBAT will have questions and answer options only in English and Hindi
- There will be no negative marking in CBAT.
- Candidates must note that they must bring an official Vision Certificate to the examination center while appearing for the aptitude test. Candidates who fail to bring their vision certificate by an Eye Specialist will not be allowed to appear for the aptitude test.

Stage 4: Document Verification / Medical Examination
Candidates who perform well in all three stages will be called further for the final stage of the RRB ASM recruitment process, that is, the document verification, and the medical examination. In this stage, candidates will need to present their original documents (like mark sheets, birth proof, cast certificate, etc.) as per their online application form. Along with the document verification, the medical test will also be held of all the shortlisted candidates.
Candidates who will clear the document verification process and Medical examination will stand a chance to make their name to the final merit list of the selected candidates based on their performance in all the recruitment stages.

The initial Pay Scale of an RRB ASM employee is Rs. 35,400/- per month. The salary is under level 06 of the 7th Pay Commission. The Railway Recruitment Board salary is subject to increase after training and then as per performance of the employee.

The employees recruited need to be under a probation period before they are permanently selected for the post of RRB ASM.
