RRB ALP Selection Process
The RRB ALP 2026 selection process is conducted in multiple stages to ensure candidates are evaluated on both aptitude and technical skills required for the role. The stages include:

RRB ALP Medical Fitness
The RRB ALP Medical Examination is the final stage of the selection process and is conducted to ensure candidates meet the strict medical standards required for the safety-sensitive role of Assistant Loco Pilot. Candidates must have good physical health, sound hearing, and near-perfect vision without color blindness. Qualifying Percentage
Candidates must secure the minimum qualifying percentage in each stage of the RRB ALP exam to move to the next round. CBT 1 and CBT 2 Part A follow category-wise qualifying marks, while CBT 2 Part B requires a fixed 35% score from all candidates regardless of category.
CBT 1 marks are qualifying only and are not included in the final merit list. In CBT 2, only Part A marks are considered for CBAT shortlisting and final merit preparation, whereas Part B is qualifying in nature and its marks are not added to merit under any condition.

RRB ALP Exam Pattern 2026
The RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) Exam Pattern 2026 includes multiple stages to shortlist candidates for the final selection. RRB ALP CBT I Exam Pattern 2026
CBT 1 is a qualifying-stage exam with 75 MCQ-based questions for 75 marks, completed within 60 minutes. The marks scored in this stage are not added to the final merit list.
RRB ALP CBT 1 now includes only three sections after the removal of General Awareness & Current Affairs in the updated 2026 pattern. Every question carries 1 mark. RRB deducts 1/3rd mark for every incorrect answer. The difficulty level of questions is generally based on the Class 10 standard.

RRB ALP CBT 2 Pattern
CBT 2 is the main stage of the RRB ALP selection process and checks both technical understanding and trade-related knowledge. The exam includes 175 questions for 175 marks and is divided into two separate sections — Part A and Part B.
A negative marking of 1/3rd mark applies to every wrong answer in both parts. Candidates must complete each section within its fixed duration because sectional timing is applicable. The combined duration of CBT 2 is 150 minutes.
Part A evaluates a candidate’s Mathematics, Reasoning, and Basic Science & Engineering knowledge through 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes. The marks scored in this section are used to shortlist candidates for the CBAT stage and prepare the final merit list.
The difficulty level of questions is generally based on the Class 10 standard. The Basic Science & Engineering section includes topics such as Engineering Drawing, Units and Measurements, Heat and Temperature, Work and Energy, Basic Electricity, Levers, IT Literacy, and Occupational Safety.

Marking Scheme: 1 mark for each correct answer, negative marking of ⅓ mark for each incorrect answer.
- In the first two stages of CBT, there will be negative marking.
- \(^1/_3\) rd of the allotted marks will be deducted for each wrong answer.
- If a candidate qualifies both the CBT I and CBT II stages, he will be called for Computer Based Aptitude Test and Document Verification as applicable.
- There will be no negative marking in CBAT.
- The CBAT exam will have questions in both English and Hindi.
Important Points of RRB ALP CBT II (Part B)
- Candidates must score a minimum of 35% marks in Part B of CBT 2 of RRB ALP
- It is a qualifying section consisting of questions from the trade syllabus prescribed by the DGET.
- Those candidates who hold ITI/Trade apprenticeship will have to appear for the relevant trade section questions.
- Candidates who are eligible for the post of ALP with a degree/ diploma and HSC (10+2) have to select relevant trades that are listed in the trade list of engineering disciplines.
RRB ALP Computer Based Aptitude Test
The Computer Based Aptitude Test will be only for the candidates for Assistant Loco Pilot.
- There will be no negative marking in this stage.
- One needs to score a minimum of 42 marks in each ‘test of batteries’ to qualify.
- No relaxation is permissible for this stage of selection.
RRB ALP Document Verification
RRB conducts Document Verification after the CBAT stage for shortlisted candidates. During this stage, candidates must submit original documents and photocopies for verification.
The details mentioned in the application form must match the submitted certificates and ID proof. Any incorrect information or missing document can lead to rejection. After DV, candidates appear for the Railway Medical Examination.
OBC-NCL candidates must carry a valid Non-Creamy Layer certificate. Candidates working in Government departments or PSUs must also submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer.

RRB ALP Eligibility Criteria

RRB ALP Age Limit (as on 01-07-2026)
As per the official guidelines of the Railway Recruitment Board, candidates must be between 18 and 30 years of age as of the specified cutoff date.
One important point worth noting for returning aspirants: the age limit for the General category has been revised from an earlier maximum of 33 years to 30 years. This is a significant change.

RRB ALP Educational Qualification
The ALP post is a technical role directly involved in train operations, so a plain graduate degree is not sufficient. Candidates must have Matriculation plus ITI, or a 3-year Diploma in Engineering disciplines.

RRB ALP Nationality 2026
Nationality is an important eligibility criterion for the RRB ALP exam.
